Back and Forth?

We have returned from our trip back east. Now we find that we are considering relocating there to be closer to family. Chapel Hill looms large on our radar. It's near the Amtrak line that would get us up to Laura's family -- in Maryland -- or down to my family -- in Columbia, SC. It also appears, at first glance, to be a good city in which to live a carfree lifestyle.

We're busy trying to figure out whether to go and how to go and how to go about looking for work there while living almost two-thousand miles away. I'm certainly not going to be popping in to the Chapel Hill Whole Foods to fill out an application.

Any of my readers out there in Chapel Hill?

While we're wondering what to do, and while my kids are home for summer, I don't know if I'll be posting as regularly. I'm also stepping up some of the copy-editing I'm doing to try to boost my own, meagre, at-home-dad income.

I've been an at-home-dad for twelve years, and I've been in Santa Fe for twenty-five. It might be a good time to shake things up.

Hi Paul,
Spencer and I are in Wilmington, about 2-1/2 hours away from Chapel Hill and we love that area. It's a small little college town with a really great downtown and wonderful vibe. It seems to be pretty bike-friendly and with Carrboro and Durham so close by, you could easily bike between them. Durham is a bit farther away, but not too far for the bike. Since the medical school and big hospital there, I hear a lot of the jobs are healthcare-related.

I haven't been to Columbia but Spence and I are actually thinking about relocating to Greenville SC since we love the mountains and the Asheville area, but not the lousy economy. It's what I imagine Wilmington could be in 20 years - green, bike-friendly, with a great economy, and the cost of living is pretty low. The cost of living in SC tends to be cheaper than NC which is something to keep in mind as you decide on your move. Based on your lifestyle, I think Greenville might be a pretty good fit for you guys and it's less than 2 hours from your family. :) GreenvilleSC.gov has lots of info on the city, and you can find more info about biking in the city at these sites:

Hope that helps!
